Sports Science Association of Alberta

The Sports Science Association of Alberta (SSAA) was formed in 1985 as a provincial organization of sport scientists. One of the major reasons for founding the organization was to provide a vehicle to interface sport scientists with coaches and athletes, sport organizations, and government agencies. Sport science is a general term which includes the disciplines of biomechanics, pedagogy, psychology, exercise physiology, nutrition and sport administration. The SSAA is housed within the Sport Medicine Council of Alberta (SMCA) and remains as one of the four founding provider groups of the SMCA.

Since 1989, limited funding from the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation and formerly from the Alberta Sport Council has been provided to the SSAA through the SMCA. These funds are meant to support projects classified under broad headings of education and research to enhance the development of amateur sport in Alberta.

Educational initiatives have included production of a video, significant support of the SMCA Sport Nutrition and Drugs in Sport Programs, and “Super Seminar” programs with the sports of hockey, rowing, cross-country skiing, and speed skating. Applied sport research initiatives have been undertaken in all disciplines to promote the acquisition of new knowledge to aid in the development and enhancement of amateur sport.
