Board of Directors
President Jim KlingleJim is a Partner in Emerging Directions Consulting Ltd., a two-person, Alberta-based consulting firm incorporated in 1999. He delivers responsive facilitation, evaluation, and research services to Alberta non-profit organizations. Jim has twenty-five years of experience as a private consultant serving a wide variety of non-profit agencies, boards and executive directors. He has served on the board of the following organizations: Community Connections, Boyle McCauley Health Centre, Edmonton Community Loan Fund, Licensed Practical Nurses Educational Foundation, Connect Society of Alberta, Terra Association for Parent Teens, and Edmonton John Howard Society. On four of these boards, he was the Board Chair. Jim has also received training as a Board Development Program Facilitator and delivered this training as a volunteer instructor over a two year period. |
Vice President Olivia McGhan-HammellOlivia is an associate lawyer at Field LLP in Edmonton, Alberta where she practices in Health Law and General Litigation. During law school, Olivia was an executive member of the Sports and Entertainment and Law Society, serving as the president in her final year of studies. Prior to commencing her legal practice, she held roles in the professional sports, arts and culture, and education industries. Olivia is a former member of the Canadian National Fencing Team in Women’s Sabre and an avid supporter of amateur, collegiate, and professional sports. |
Past President H. Douglas McLaughlinA native of Manitoba, Doug brings long experience in business and non-profit management to the SMCA board. With a background in advertising and marketing, he worked in media and ad agencies until coming to Alberta twenty years ago: building a consulting practice, Doug focused on the non-profit sector. He made the move from Calgary to Edmonton in 2009 and served as SMCA Interim Executive Director through the summer of 2018, volunteering for the board when that service came to an end. |
Secretary/Treasurer Michael PaullMichael was born and raised in Edmonton. Since 1986 he has earned his living as an independent financial consultant. Just finishing his term as President for Fort Edmonton Foundation, he has served on numerous other boards for the past 25 years, including Royal Alex Hospital Foundation, Royal Alex Ethics board, EJCC Foundation, Junior Achievement as well as President of Glenora Community League. During his down time, he has coached over 40 soccer teams, including Junior High, Women over 35 and a Provincial championship team under 18. He is married with 3 children, one a massage therapist another a Physiotherapist. Michael is looking forward to lending a hand in anyway possible with the SMCA. |
Member at Large Dave KatoDave has been with the Sport Medicine Council of Alberta since its inception in 1983. He is an active course conductor and serves as a master course conductor for SMCA. Currently Dave is an Assistant Professor at MacEwan University in the Physical Education Transfer program where he teaches Sport Injury Management, Anatomy, Physiology, Health Education, and Resistance Training. Dave did his undergraduate work at the University of Alberta, master’s work at Indiana State University, and PhD program again at the University of Alberta. Dave is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP) and has worked with a wide assortment of athletes, professional, collegiate and recreational. He focuses more on the academic aspect of athletic training all the while keeping his clinical skills sharp volunteering at various events. |

Member at Large Arif KhanArif is a Director with Khan Communication Services Inc. Arif has over 25 years of experience in leadership roles in various organizations in finance. Over the past 20 years, he has been an active member of the Alberta philanthropic community through his work as President of the Autism Society of Edmonton Area (ASEA); President of Rotary Club of Edmonton Mayfield; Board of Trustee for Project Shelter Wakadogo; Board Member of Aurora Charter School; and Board member of Sturgeon Hospital Foundation. He has also been involved with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, YMCA and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Arif graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from McMaster University and has a MBA Degree from Bellevue University, Nebraska, USA. Arif and his wife Nausheen reside in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with their two daughters. |
