Sport & Mental Health Course
In recent years, the prevalence of mental health in sports has become an important topic of discussion in the sector. In particular, there is a need in Alberta for an introductory course to educate all those involved in sport about what mental health is, how mental health issues can affect athletes (and coaches), strategies to identify various issues, and steps to take to work towards effective solutions.
The purpose of this online short course is to educate all those who oversee and volunteer for amateur sport (i.e., coaches, personal trainers, medical professionals, therapists, teachers, parents) about the importance and impact of mental health in the sport and recreation sector.
This course WAS NOT designed to be a diagnostic tool to use to identify coaches or athletes with various mental illnesses. Instead, this course WAS designed to increase sport practitioners awareness and knowledge of mental health in sport contexts. However, we do hope that sport practitioners will be able to learn some 'red flags' or things to look for in athletes (or other coaches) that may require further assistance by mental health professionals.
